Two Lucent scientists charged with software theft in graft to Datang
Federal authorities charged Hai Lin and Kai Xu of Lucent Technologies and Yong-Qing Cheng of Village Networks in Newark. The trio formed a joint venture with Datang Telecom Beijing to market Lucent PathStar software, seeking to copy the product for a Chinese company largely owned by the Communist government. They planned stock issuance in China and the U.S. and boasted it would be the Cisco of China. The defendants allegedly transferred substantial source code and targeted a September rollout. Lucent reported the theft to the FBI and U.S. attorney’s office in February and cooperates.
