MacArthur Bars Hatoyama From Japanese Diet Roles
General MacArthur barred Ichiro Hatoyama, leader of the ruling party in Japan, from Diet membership and any official post citing a nearly two-decade anti democratic record. The move comes after Hatoyama’s party won most Diet seats in April elections, making him a likely premier candidate. The order cites involvement in prewar militarist policies, suppression of dissent in education, and support for aggression, including remarks praising Pearl Harbor.
