House panel approves South Africa sanctions over apartheid
The Democratic led House Foreign Affairs Committee voted 29 to 6 to impose new U S sanctions on South Africa. The plan would ban new investment and loans, halt computer sales, and shut off imports of about 600 million in Krugerrands. The GOP opposed, saying sanctions could worsen conditions for blacks. The measure moves to the House floor with Senate action likely by midsummer.
