Partly cloudy through Wednesday with scattered showers and thunderstorms mainly north and west. May births list several families with new babies. marriage licenses, traffic court entries, and numerous civil notices follow. Funeral services and obituaries are noted for multiple towns with service times and locations.
A federal court jury found Robert E. McGrath of Iowa City guilty of draft evasion. He faces sentencing May 19 after a pre sentence investigation ordered by Judge Henry N. Graven. McGrath acted as his own attorney and presented no witnesses or closing argument.
Construction laborers and operating engineers held a second day of strike with no sign of a resolution. Allied Construction Interests and laborer representatives planned talks Tuesday morning, with a union meeting set for that night to discuss outcomes. Other unions remain off strike but without contracts, including teamsters and bricklayers.
John Ruml of Washington high school will join a Pomfret school international affairs seminar. He was chosen among ten nationwide candidates announced by Supt. Arnold Salisbury. Cedar Rapids candidates were considered by Sutherland Cook. The program will last about two weeks on India then July 1 to August 21 in India.
Arthur M. Morris 529 Fifth St SE Cedar Rapids died Tuesday after a brief illness. Born January 27, 1910 in Kentucky he served in World War II and was married to Lovella Jones since March 8 1949 at Sidney Nebraska. Survived by wife mother and three sisters. Services at Turner chapel with time to be announced. calls after 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Funeral home services are planned for Wednesday at 2 p.m. officiated by Jerry Drahovzal with burial at Czech National Cemetery.

A five year old income tax refund suit by James H. Maloney of Cedar Rapids was dismissed in federal court after an out of court settlement. Maloney sought 441,73.36 from the U.S. government claiming excess tax from a trust. The government argued the trust was not valid for tax purposes. Each side will pay its own costs. A new bankruptcy petition was filed by Elmer H. Lendt of Bennett listing debts of 16,087.54 and assets of 1,250 exempt.
In 1956 Link letter submitted a bill for mileage from home and meals while serving as county auditor. The board denied reimbursement citing an opinion that meals are a personal expense for all county officers. McKinstry repaid 768.74 of 3,074.95 claimed for 1958 59 and 1960 after auditors estimated 25 percent duplication. He maintains the funds were earned and says auditors later deemed them illegal. Board Chairman Dudley Henderson and Miles Sutera on the 1956- era board commented.

Robert Craver purchased the DeVar restaurant at 312 Second Ave SE from Dr. Thomas F. Lange who ran it for many years. Craver, a Cedar Rapids resident, has operated in Oskaloosa with his parents. In September 1959 Cedar Rapids voters faced a $4,990,000 school bond issue and two franchise renewal questions for Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. Polls stayed open to 8 p m with 10 474 voters turning out that day. Voters used paper ballots as turnout previously topped 7 900 with an approval ratio near 17 to 1.
Courthouse officials report all bids under the projected cost for a 70 by 65 foot metal maintenance garage to be built four miles northwest of Cedar Rapids on county land. Schoff Construction Co. bid $32,480, beating Oliphant Engineering and others for the project. County Engineer Harrington notes urban encroachment makes equipment access difficult.
Three men faced arraignment before Judge Charles Penningroth on criminal charges. Burley Mills and William Forbes, both in their teens, are charged with forgery for cashing a forged 10.51 dollar check at a Cedar Rapids grocery. Gene Kloubec is accused of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after police found him drinking with a 16-year-old in a car. Virgil Fritz received a bench parole after pleading guilty to desertion and abandonment.
Two men charged with drunk driving were given time to plead at arraignment in district court Tuesday. James P. Donahue, 36, of 1431 Fourteenth Ave SE, faces a third offense. A Cedar Rapids man was arrested Monday on a first offense drunk driving charge after his car struck the rear of a vehicle that had stopped for a traffic signal at Eighth Avenue SE and Second Street. The suspect is identified by his address 1364 Thirty-eighth St SE.
In Judge Floyd Philbrick's court two juries were being selected. Gerald D Annis 21 Central City faces a drunk driving charge from February with trial set to start Thursday at 9 a.m. George Dillon Strawberry Point faces a breaking and entering charge for a January 28 Greene Square tavern raid involving checks merchandise and a revolver.
President Eisenhower indicates he would back a constructive farm bill and criticizes ongoing federal controls that disrupt farmers' lives. He argues government surpluses, notably of wheat, depress prices and burden citizens, and urges policies boosting progress toward economic equality and greater farm freedom.
