The forecast calls for increasing clouds and light rain tonight with overnight lows around 35 to 45 degrees. Thursday brings cooler conditions central and east with highs near 45 to 55, then clearing Friday into a 50 to 55 degree day. Saturday looks fair and dry with a 52 to 64 degree range.
Senator Hickenlooper pressed Lattimore on ties to communists and alleged leaks. Lattimore denied knowledge of Loomis being a Communist, recalled no Soviet pouch use beyond 1947, and said Field was liberal but not a communist. He described Industo as anti-communist in China and said Agnes Smedley and others were not known communists to him.
Stassen criticized Truman for appointing personal puppets and using a special train trip to Washington state to boost political power. He argued the trip targets a Democratic senator tied to Hollywood, while proposing a federal health reinsurance plan and expanded industrial health insurance to address national medical problems.
City planners and developers discussed speeding plat approvals in Cedar Rapids. County inspectors and council members urged closer cooperation while six preliminary plats, covering 96 potential lots, drew tentative approval in parts of the southeast and other sectors.

The Linn County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of seven trucks and three cars for a net total of 15819.70 after bids from 14 firms. Vehicles include six two-ton trucks and chassis from Rapids Chevrolet and other bids for dump bodies, a panel truck, a business coupe, and two sedans. Trade-ins yielded 1221 total credits, and deliveries are planned before May 18 to replace old road, probation, and relief department equipment.
Clair Lowell Marks, 31, of Minneapolis, faces false check charges in Linn County. The state bureau links him to at least 12 bad checks totaling under $35 each in grocery stores across Iowa since December 29, 1947. He denies writing them, but handwriting matches. He was arrested in Marion after trying to cash a check in Springville and faces trial in Central City for a $32.45 check.
The effort to form the town of Hiawatha near Cedar Rapids hit a hurdle when District Judge G. K. Thompson issued an order halving part of the originally proposed area. The action stalls the incorporation process and raises questions about the town’s boundaries and governance.
A judge set aside an incorporation election after eight landowners petitioned to exclude their property northeast of highway 150. Six of them asked to remove their names from the petition, filed April 6, with an order issued Wednesday requiring area adjustment and a new election date if incorporation proceeds. The eight reside in a triangular area bounded by Robins Road, Shiloh Cemetery, and the Illinois Central overpass. Names include Paul L Mathis Theo L Mathis Kyle Germaine Hildred L Germaine Lester Alman Mary H Alman Henry W Severe Anna M Severe.
Marvin M. Myers, 43, of Gregory South Dakota pleaded guilty to a charge of false uttering of a check in district court. He received a 120 day suspended sentence and had previously pled innocent on February 18 while held in Linn County jail. The case involved a $43.50 check passed at a Cedar Rapids hotel on December 15.
The plaintiff dismissed five cases in district court on Tuesday and Wednesday. The actions included Ida M. Flewelling v Guy R Flewelling for divorce and several personal and property damage claims against Luyvenus Williams Donald Adamek Ward Wright Merchants Motor Freight Inc Valley Bank and Trust Company and R L Maxine Herweh.
Mrs. Bertha Jensen sues Robert E. and Pauline Wensorra in a two count petition seeking 1590 and 954 dollars for two promissory notes delivered April 5, 1949, allegedly unpaid, totaling 2544 dollars.
Sam Adams files suit to eject Mr and Mrs Larry Burns from property at 1547 Avenue NE for nonpayment of $50 rent due April 17. William C Creglon sues Albarn Wear for $220 on a note delivered Dec 8 1949 and asks for a lien on Wear's car.
Mercy hospital received judgments Tuesday in two ac count suits. Millard and Eva Colson face $205.75 in damages while Earl and Vera Grimm owe $130.39.
In Angels Camp California paving blocks made from Royal mine gold ore have been laid on Main street as part of preparations for the jumping frog jubilee to be held May 19 20 and 21. The stunt recalls Angel Camp's 1854 reputation as the town where the streets were paved with gold.
Louie Rubek 65 of 1616 B Avenue NW died Wednesday at 7 30 am in a Cedar Rapids hospital after a long illness. He was a retired printer who worked for The Gazette about 43 years. Born in Cedar Rapids he lived here all his life. He married Rose Richard in 1933 and has a son. Surviving are two sisters Mary Loftus and Lydia Souchek both of Cedar Rapids four brothers Joseph Rubek of Des Moines Fr andolph and Ludwig Rubek of Cedar Rapids. He was a member of Crescent Masonic Lodge No 25. Services set for 3 30 pm Friday at Turner Chapel with call after 1 pm Thursday. Burial in Bohemian National Cemetery.
