Commerce Department data show consumer spending rose 0.9 percent in March, the biggest jump since August 2009 and above economists’ 0.6 percent forecast. The rise reinforces signals of momentum as the economy ends a weak first quarter, though unemployment claims rose 14,000 to 344,000 amid seasonal distortions from holidays.
U S construction outlays rose 0.2 percent to 942.5 billion dollars in March, with public construction down 0.6 percent and state local government spending slipping for a fifth straight month. Private construction rose 0.5 percent as residential building hits post crisis highs and non residential spending edges up.
