Black Maria Sprints to Five Races on Heavy Union Course
The famed mare Black Maria owned by John C. Stevens won two races for a $600 purse, dead heated for first, and placed in two more over four mile heats on a rough track. The event left her rested for months while rival horses suffered direly, with Lady Relief dying and Trifle sidelined. The record appears in The American Turf by the Historical Company.
