City leaders including Council member Kare discuss extending the 1 percent local option sales tax for 20 years to fund flood protection and other city needs. The measure would raise about 20 million dollars annually and affects polling places and voter options for Tuesday’s vote.
Police say a female Cedar Rapids cabdriver was found dead Friday night in the Tat block between Second and Third Avenue SE. Investigators classified the death as a homicide, the first in Cedar Rapids in 2011, with the victim unnamed pending family notification.
The November elections reshaped Iowa politics with Republicans gaining the governor's seat and majorities in the House and near control of the Senate. Of 38 new legislators, 29 joined the House and nine the Senate, with many freshmen adapting to a tougher environment and shifting roles.
