Frank Meroshek of Mt. Vernon was named defendant in three lawsuits totaling 59,184.93 for injuries and death from a November 19 collision on Highway 30, six miles east of Cedar Rapids. The Witts sue for personal injuries, wrongful death of Barbara Jo, and Mrs. Witt’s injuries.
Several hundred Linn county taxpayers waited in line Saturday to pay the first half of the 1951 taxes. County Treasurer Frank F. Bates kept the office open until 4 p.m. to accommodate last minute payers, extending the usual Saturday noon closing.
Veterans of Foreign Wars post 9129 sues M. A. Leoni doing business as Modern Refrigerator Company for 322 dollars over an March 5 agreement. The post says 222 dollars was paid for an ice cube maker not delivered and seeks 222 restitution plus 100 damages.
Three wills were admitted to probate on Saturday. Clara H. Dellit's will, dated March 11, names sister Adele D. Leamon sole heir and executrix without bond. Jay R. Coggshall's will dated March 24 leaves estate to Robert C. Leefers and names him executor without bond. Dean J. Litchfield's will, died February 19, names wife Margaret A. Litchfield sole heir and executrix without bond. Fred J. Novotny sued Jack Hathaway and wife for 373.55 on a stated account.
Cedar Rapids superior court sentenced Robert R. Roloff to 30 days in the county jail while Ellsworth Amrine and Laurence Berends received $25 fines on intoxication charges. Amrine, arrested in the Milwaukee depot, has no Cedar Rapids address, and Berends lives at 1528 Fourteenth avenue SE. Roloff was ejected from a tavern on First avenue east and returned. Judge William Matias imposed the penalties.

King completes recruit training at Fort Leonard Wood and enjoys a five day furlough with his parents. K P Meeting Cedar Rapids Pythians holds a social with potluck and entertainment. Nurses Association meets for a panel discussion. Ramsay and Simanovsky attain private first class at Marine base in San Diego.
Results from Cedar Rapids ninth annual all city instrumental contest show Friday ratings for public school pupils at McKinley high school. Judges assign scores across solo woodwind brass ensembles naming Roosevelt and McKinley participants and various honors.
The reading lists several ensembles including Roosevelt brass quintet and string groups, with mentions of senior drum ensemble and percussion quintet ratings. Also noted are Franklin string quartets and violin ensembles such as Franklin McKinley violin quartet and Roosevelt violin quartet.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lazar Krachmer of 526 Forest Drive SE were conducted Friday afternoon at Turner chapel by Rabbi Harold Salzmann. Burial followed at Eben Israel cemetery. Born in Russia in 1890, she married in 1908. her husband leads Kratchmer Reliable Furniture Company.
Services for Roy A. Smith of 812 Seventh Street SW will be at St. Patrick's Church at 10 a.m. Monday, with burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The body was moved from Teahen Chapel to the residence. Daughters of Isabella will recite the Rosary at 7 p.m. Saturday, Court No. 727 W.C.O.F. and the Court Drill Team at 8 p.m. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. D. J. Lenihan will recite the Rosary at 8 p.m. Sunday at the residence, where friends may call.
Union spokesmen pressed for Lincoln birthday as a holiday and 49 days sick leave on a seven year basis plus double time for holiday work. They demanded a 40 hour week but city officials cited legal and budget limits with a 13 cent or $25 raise cap. Workers promised to resume discussions while CIO groups in health and sewage departments were noted.

I A Lowell Linn county probation officer spoke to the Cedar Rapids Council of Social Planning after the scheduled speaker Henry W. Burma canceled due to snow and high water. Burma will speak at the council meeting April 27.
Henry Bowers of 410 F avenue NW was treated at St. Luke's hospital for wrist and forearm cuts. Cedar Rapids police said the injuries were self harm related with a razor and a pen knife. He was in fairly good condition and kept for observation.
Washington lawmakers clash as Senator Hickenlooper questions presidential power to deploy or transfer atomic weapons to an international force. Senator McMahon counters the act bans transfers, urging staff review while defending U S control and the role of Congress in war powers.

Fifth annual spring concert of VFW Post 788 band is Sunday at 3 p.m. at the quarters 709 Second Avenue. Two soloists and the band will perform military marches overtures a waltz and novelty numbers. Larry Klima clarinetist from the Horace Heidt show will play Fantasy Chopin and his own arrangement of the Clarinet Polka. John Best cornet player will be accordion soloist performing Sharp Shooters March and The Shoo Fly Boogie. The free concert is open to the public.
