Roan Presses Legal Fight Over Iowa Liquor Tax
Rep. Phil Roan of Fort Madison argues that a 10 percent Iowa liquor tax could push liquor store income under federal tax laws. The bill, backed by Roan earlier, sits in the Senate committee with projected revenue above $1 million for pensions and homestead relief. He cites rulings that state private business may be taxed by Congress and that state liquor salaries could be subject to federal income tax. Iowa liquor operations earned over $2.9 million for the general fund last year.
