Cancer fight inspires English Channel swim plan

Cheyanne Boddicker of Tipton aims to swim the English Channel this August to raise 25 000 for cancer research. Inspired by her grandfather Wendell Noller and by watching Velvet Brown, she trains in Iowa City Coralville Lake and Lake Michigan with Jon Munzer to mimic Channel conditions. She has raised 6 500 so far and will travel with family and a Channel Swimming Association guide, spending about 10 000 on the effort.

Benton County man dies in wind fueled garden fire

A Benton County man died Tuesday afternoon when a gust of wind pushed a controlled garden burn out of control near his Urbana area home at 2858 Highway 150. The man, 82, was identified as Robert Bush. Investigators are examining the incident and may release further details.

Officials identify victim in Columbus Junction blaze

Police say 52 year old Timothy Miles of Columbus Junction died in Saturday's downtown apartment fire. Owner Paul Buffington and resident Percy Taylor were injured. The second victim's name is being withheld pending next of kin notification. Investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office and Louisa County Sheriff's Office continues.

Minn. teen to face separate murder trials in Iowa killings

Michael Swanson 17 of Minnesota is charged with two counts of first degree murder and two counts of first degree robbery for the November shootings of Sheila Myers 61 in Humboldt and Vicky Bowman Hall 47 in Algona. A district judge ruled the trials cannot be merged due to different counties and districts.

Former Monticello manufacturer sentenced to probation

Gene Riddle 75 of Monticello was sentenced in U S District Court to five years probation and community service for negligently discharging hazardous waste into Kitty Creek from his circuit board company Riddle Inc. He admitted no EPA or state permit to store chemicals and faced restitution over 270000 dollars.

Man pleads not guilty in teen alcohol death case

Dustin Thomas 27 of Crescent faces a felony charge of supplying alcohol to a minor resulting in death after Julio Caceres 17 of Harlan was found unconscious at a party October 9 and died two days later. Autopsy cites choking on vomit. Trial set for April 12.
