Cedar Rapids floodgate milestone marks new protection
Federal and city officials celebrated the completion of a floodgate on 12th Avenue SE as a milestone in Cedar Rapids permanent flood protection. The $6.39 million project, part of a roughly $750 million system funded by the Army Corps of Engineers, protects the New Bohemia District and can be closed in about an hour. The gate stands 8 feet tall, 79 feet long and weighs about 70 000 pounds.
