Corbett Falls Short of Ballot Petitions for Governor Bid

Former Cedar Rapids mayor Ron Corbett ended a 280 day campaign after a state panel ruled he was eight signatures short of the required petitions to appear on the ballot. The 2 to 1 decision clears Gov. Kim Reynolds from a June Republican primary and removes a possible primary challenge. Corbett, who argued the panel’s actions favored the governor, said he would not appeal. He ended with 3 997 verified signatures vs the 4 005 needed.

Judge rejects stand your ground immunity in Ped Mall shooting

Iowa City judge rules Lamar Wilson did not prove self defense under the new stand your ground law and will be sentenced after a jury convicted him of voluntary manslaughter for the Aug. 27 Pedestrian Mall shooting that killed Kaleek Jones and injured two others. The ruling also finds the law void for vagueness and ineffective in this case. Prosecutors and witnesses detailed Wilson firing into a crowd from two guns after a clash between groups. Wilson faced up to 24 years in prison.
