Iowa Senate approves fines hike for speeding and other violations

The Iowa Senate voted 28 to 21 to raise more than 100 fines, generating about 2.8 million dollars in fiscal 2002 and 3.3 million in later years. Most speeding tickets would rise by 10 dollars for 6 to 20 mph over the limit, with increases also for illegal parking radar jamming seat belt and minimum speed offenses. Senator Merlin Bartz questioned revenue motives while Senator Gene Maddox said the moves update penalties long overdue. A proposed amendment linked higher fines to raising the speed limit to 70 mph but failed.
