Heaven's Gate deaths raise questions about UFO cult crisis

In Rancho Santa Fe California thirty nine Heaven's Gate members died over three days by self administered drug and alcohol overdoses after packing bags for a supposed rendezvous with a Hale-Bopp comet linked UFO. Videos and farewell letters circulated as authorities described an organized planned exit. The group led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles promoted an afterlife path, while the Heaven's Gate site and related videos depicted a collective ascent.

One third of U.S. children lacked insurance in 1995 96

Iowa artist crafts Christ statue for rural church

Washington sculptor Paul Alquesera III is finishing a 12 foot bronze Christ on a cross for St Peter and Paul Catholic Church near Harper Keokuk County. The project, donated by the artist with church funding for materials, aims for Memorial Day reveal after a 1993 lightning strike destroyed the previous statue. The artist says the effort was spiritually meaningful though not profitable.

Probe finds troopers right in Garber case at Anchor Inn

State internal affairs probe finds troopers acted correctly in November at the Anchor Inn Garber where a 10 officer team inspected the bar and arrested three patrons two for intoxication and one for interference with official acts. Commissioner Paul Wieck II released the findings.

Branstad Signs 200 Million Tax Cut In Iowa History

Governor Terry Branstad signed into law a 200 million income tax cut the largest in Iowa history at a Clive construction site. He called it a great day for Iowa noting the 10 percent across the board rate reduction will boost competitiveness and create quality jobs with first paychecks under the new rate in 1998.
