Senator Barry Goldwater a Republican on the Senate Labor Committee says he will oppose the confirmation of Stuart Rothman for the $20 000 a year NLRB general counsel post. Rothman is a Republican from St Paul Minn and faces hearings before the committee.
The Waldhem tanker captain says fog and radar signals show the Valdhem was struck by the liner Santa Rosa after the ships were hove to in thick conditions. Santa Rosa’s owners claim the Valdhem crossed in front in clear weather. Coast Guard inquiry begins next Monday as four Valdhem crewmen die.
The turbulent career of Grant Withers 55 former Hollywood leading man ends in suicide. His body was found in bed in his North Hollywood apartment after overdosing on sleeping tablets with two notes explaining the act. He once eloped with Loretta Young at age 17 and married in Yuma. their marriage was annulled and later divorces followed amid financial troubles and overdue bills.
A judge barred picketing for at least 10 days amid a violent strike at a Mechanicville New York paper mill. The New York State Industrial Commission urged halting production at West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. while mediators prepare recommendations. Non striking salaried workers have run the machines for a week after a 3 hour brawl involving about 200 strikers, non strikers and police.
President Eisenhower will deliver a keynote address at Gettysburg College during the spring convocation on Saturday April 4. Body to be returned to Algona for burial.

Mrs. Joe Blank, 70, a former Cedar Rapids resident, died early Saturday at Vinton. Survived by her husband and two sons from a previous marriage, James E. Paul of Cedar Rapids and Henry Paul of Omaha. Services set for Monday at 2 p.m. in Taylor Funeral Home, Vinton.
Washington D C was plunged into near night for several minutes after 3 p m EST as a thick cloud layer moved ahead of a thunderstorm line. The weather bureau described the event as very unusual and possibly 50 miles wide with subsequent heavy rain and lightning. Telecommunication lines from government buildings clogged and public inquiries surged.
The agriculture department extended for another year price support loans on farm stored 1957 crop grain sorghums. About 1,709,361 hundredweight of the 1957 sorghum crop are now pledged under the loans.

Sixty American newsboys on a Parade and TWA sponsored 10 day tour were diverted to Lajes airbase in the Azores after an engine failure on a four engine Constellation. The group, chosen for character and scholarship, awaited a second TWA plane to continue to Italy. Gazette carrier Carroll Humphrey Jr. 16, son of Carroll and Mrs Humphrey of Atkins is part of the group.
A $300 drunk driving fine was levied Saturday against Bart J. Hemesath, 35, of 21 Wilson Ave SW after he pled guilty. Deputies arrested him on Edgewood Road NW at Johnson Avenue. A suspended 3 month sentence was granted Dorothy Baxa, 36, of Lisbon, who pled guilty Saturday to shoplifting from a Cedar Rapids dime store Friday.
Edwin Walters of La Porte City files suit for his son Danny inguring in a 1957 Palo county road incident. Defendant James L Burr of Hiawatha allegedly ran over the boy with one wheel on the ankle and another on the back. Damages include 1529.75 actual and 5000 exemplary.
Soviet sources at the United Nations advise against speculation of a New York summit noting Geneva is the best bet. President Eisenhower said U N headquarters is the only practical place in this country but cited crowded conditions in New York. Khrushchev’s US visit prospects are joked about by a Soviet diplomat.
