In Des Moines the house opened debate on a truck tax bill aimed at boosting state revenue by about 1 million dollars annually. The plan replaces a ten mile route tax with a gross weight based flat tax and reduces registration fees to five dollars, with exemptions for farmers using their own trucks.
Chris Jensen 60 of West Union and several West Union high school vocational class boys were injured Tuesday when Jensen’s car collided with a northbound truck on highway 11 two and a half miles north of Center Point. Jensen suffered a fractured left leg and head injuries. the boys had cuts and bruises. The group, 18 or 20 in multiple cars, were en route to Cedar Rapids to visit industrial plants. Jensen swerved to avoid a slower car, then struck the truck. no driver details available.
Detectives investigate theft of school property including a William C Haynes piccolo worth 120, a violin two bows and a case worth 50, and three teachers grade books. The items disappeared between March 20 and 22 with school and Moehlmann’s ownership cited.
James Dewey, federal labor conciliator, met Tuesday with United Mine Workers officials and eastern soft coal operators in New York. They seek a new Appalachian wage hour agreement before the current two year contract ends at midnight March 31. Dewey was sent by Secretary Frances Perkins amid fears of a possible bituminous mine suspension on April 1.

Mrs James E Gilroy of Lost Nation visited over weekend with Mr and Mrs W H Balster. Fire department responded Monday at 7 45 p m to rescue a cat from tree limbs at Mrs Myrtle Cunningham’s residence.
The Mothers' club will gather Thursday at 2:30 PM at Mrs. George Michel's residence on Alburnett road. Mrs. Paul Beach assists the hostess, and Mrs. Robert Hess will conduct the program.
Mrs. Andrew P. Munsen hosted the Ivanhoe club gathering on Monday. Mrs. G. A. Storck joined as a new member while Mrs. Paul Kruger led the program on The Progress of Music.
Mr and Mrs Glenn Cheadle hosted a Monday family dinner in Beloit Wisconsin in honor of Mr and Mrs Charles Cheadle and their daughter Marion. Other guests included Miss Bernice Culver Cedar Rapids and Miss Catherine Cheadle Frank Cheadle and Janet Cheadle.

The Musical Literary club met Monday evening at Mrs Emery J Miller's home. First division featured an article on Irish Composers by Mrs J W Bowman and a vocal solo The Last Rose of Summer by Rose Wilcox. Vocal duets Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms and Love's Old Sweet Song were performed by Mrs A E Bragg and Mrs Charles D Burns with piano duet The Donny Brook Fair by Mrs Bowman and Mrs A J Keyes. An article on Victor Herbert was given by Frances Hildebrandt with piano duet Top O the Morning by Mabel Kearns and Metta Whitcomb and vocal solo Killarney by Mrs C M Robison. Mrs LaVerna Crew accompanied the numbers.
Funeral services for Harry M. Winter were held Monday at the Yocom chapel with Rev. E. T. Gough and Marion lodge No. 6 A F and A M conducting rites. Pallbearers were Raymond Stanton Irvin L. Ford Melvin Dobbs and Dr R E Lehdigh. Burial followed in Oak Shade cemetery with out-of-town relatives noted from Minnesota Chicago Central City and Cedar Rapids. Relatives include Mrs Harry M Winter Mrs Sophia Salenis and Clara of Chicago and Mr and Mrs George Trunnelle of Chicago plus Mr and Mrs J F Yates and Mrs John Drexler of Central City. Mrs Jacob Geib of Gaylord Minn and Mr Engel and Mrs William P Engel of Minneapolis plan visits here.
Michael Cahill age 63 formerly of Cedar Rapids died Monday at 1 45 p m He was born January 29 1876 He is survived by two sisters Mrs Connie Sullivan and Mrs Barney Smith both of Dubuque The body is at Balster and Hall Home for Funerals Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Iowa Senate narrowly passes a bill to place maintenance workers of the state highway commission under civil service by a 27 to 22 vote, with 119 already slated for reduction and veterans to receive extra credit in competitive exams. The measure now goes to the House.
Jimmie Shive Robert Fox and Bob Matteson were among Arthur school Cub pack No 25 members who received achievement awards at the last Cub pack meeting. Vincent P. Lau of Cassville Wis was enlisted Tuesday by Sgt August Miller army recruiter at the federal building for duty with the Fourth Signal Company at Fort Des Moines.

About one hundred Milwaukee railroad employees attended the first meeting of the Marion Cedar Rapids Milwaukee Road Service club Monday evening in the Glen room of the Cedar Rapids Gas company. The organization was completed and plans for the future were discussed.
A. L. Taylor secretary of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce spoke to about 150 Grundy Center Community club members in the Legion hall on Monday night. W. T. Hancock presided and Orie S. Imes introduced Taylor.
After serving a 30 day county jail term for a false check charge, C. C. Mullin, 52, of Marion received another 30 day term from Justice W. A. Ball. The sentence followed a $5 check allegedly presented at a grocery store on February 21.
W. J. Coleman reported a burglary at his residence at 1 a.m. Tuesday. Entry was gained via a basement coal window with hooks pried off. the intruder fled without stealing any property.
County Auditor Robert M. Vesely reminded dog owners Monday that only three days remain to pay Linn County dog taxes before a penalty of 1 attaches. The tax is 1 for males and spayed females and 3 for females. Delinquency date is April 1. Tax has been paid for 1939 on 3334 dogs to date, slightly ahead of last year's registration.
Commander G. D. Hull of Chicago, in charge of inspections for the central division navy recruiting area, awarded an excellent rating to the work personnel and materiel of the navy recruiting station in the federal building Monday. Chief E. E. Moon and James W. Keene are in charge here.
A prowler robbed the J. M. Kirkpatrick farmhouse three miles north of Mount Vernon late Sunday night or Monday morning. Thief took $1.63 in change and some food, per a report to Sheriff Jim Smith on Monday afternoon.
Cedar Rapids Gazette boys and their manager Alex Fidler visited State theater manager Ray Vernimont on Monday night to view Tail Spin with Alice Faye Nancy Kelly and Constance Bennett and Gambling Ship with Helen Mack and Robert Wilcox. The boys thanked Mr. Vernimont.
Robert Manville, 24, of 1208 First Avenue East, suffered a wrenched back at 8:55 p.m. Monday in the second crash within three hours at the Twelfth Avenue Third Street SE intersection. He was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by C. Evans Holyoke, 28, of 205 Park Court SE, which collided with a car driven by Edward LeClerc, 17, Otis Road.
H. H. Kellogg of 3400 Center Point Road NE found all four tires punctured on his car Monday afternoon at the rear of 610 Fourth Avenue SE. Police reported no witnesses nearby and could not identify any suspect.

Deputy Marshal Joe Petrus reports a federal order by Judge George C. Scott to destroy 98 ten pound boxes of red perch fillets held by a local wholesale house. The claim alleges adulteration misbranding and vermin infestation with no claimant appearing at the hearing.
Den No. 1 received the achievement ribbon and Den No. 2 earned the attendance award at a Fillmore school session of Cub Pack No. 13. Billy Hil born received a wolf badge, Glenn [text cut].
