Senate bill would expand Iowa bottle bill to include water containers
Legislation in Des Moines would broaden the 35 year old bottle bill to cover water bottles and other beverages. If passed the program would recycle about 33 tons more annually, create jobs, extend landfill life, and raise the plastic container handling fee from 1 to 2 cents for redemption centers. The change aims to boost centers like Cedar Rapids Can Shed and attract new sites while preserving the nickel deposit for consumers. Gov Branstad and House Speaker Paulsen offered cautious positions, noting stakeholder input and potential shift toward single stream recycling.
