Asbestos delays Cedar Rapids library opening into July 2018
Cedar Rapids confirms the downtown library project will slip up to four weeks into July 2018 due to a $1.3 million asbestos discovery during demolition. Library director Bob Pasicznyuk said excavation revealed tainted debris from the 1855 Washington School and 1890 Washington High School, requiring extended removal beyond the initial $42,916 contract. More than 6,000 tons of material had to be cleared.
