North Iowa Flood Forces Large Evacuations and Road Closures

Rivers rose rapidly across northern Iowa after warm weather melted heavy snow. U.S. and state highways were flooded or closed while hundreds fled lowland homes. National Guard called up as Cedar River neared record levels and Oak Park area in Charles City evacuated.

Decorah faces its worst Upper Iowa river flood in two decades with four families evacuated from the Rosendahl addition and multiple homes threatened. Roads and bridge approaches are washed out while water levels fluctuated around flood stage, aided by a Sunday rain.

Youth Building Drive Pledges Reach 918 749 in Cedar Rapids

The Cedar Rapids Marion Youth Building campaign stood at 918 749 dollars after a luncheon, about 58 percent of the goal. A victory dinner is planned for 6 30 p m at the Roosevelt hotel with workers urged to complete solicitations by then. The campaign office moves Thursday to 126 Third St SE.

Cedar River Flood Crest Expected in Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids residents in low areas were urged to clear basements ahead of a Cedar River crest forecast for Thursday. Public Improvements Commissioner Woody Stolba said the crest could hit 19 feet, up from last year’s 16.76. Crews began filling 20,000 sandbags to reinforce dikes and wells around sewer intakes as preparations move forward.

Shed Fire Claims Arson Probe For Three Men

Three men were held in the city jail Monday as investigators linked a shed fire at 1711 Fourteenth Ave SE to arson. Keith Akers 22 of Central City admitted pouring kerosene and lighting the blaze. The shed owner was John S Hartford of Fourteenth Avenue. Akers brothers Harold 18 and Benjamin Kesserling 20 of 1002 2nd St SW were not expected to face charges. Fire reported at 7 35 p.m. as Cedar River flood conditions rose to new highs since 1933.

3,500 Students Riot at Fort Lauderdale Beach

Police from six surrounding communities aided Fort Lauderdale to quell a riot by 3500 vacationing college students unhappy at being denied access to a popular unlighted beach north of the city. The unrest broke on U S A1A traffic crowded with taverns, ending after two hours of clashes, arrests, and injuries.

Kennedy Gromyko Laos talks yield vague ceasefire stance

At the White House or later, Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko and President Kennedy urged a peaceful end to Laos civil war. Gromyko conveyed Khrushchev’s message but offered no firm cease-fire commitment while Pravda favored negotiation and warned SEATO intervention.

Missing U S Plane Believed Shot Down

The State Department said it has information indicating a U S plane missing in Laos area was shot down. Press Officer Joseph Reap said it is a fair assumption the C 47 disappeared Thursday with 8 American military men aboard and he has no information about the crew.
