Burlington ordnance plant workers threaten a strike in a wage dispute. About 210 guards from the International Guard Union of America vote to strike unless a $2 an hour top scale and fringe benefits are offered. NEW YORK AP The president of Rib Mountain Radio Inc says a new Des Moines TV station could be operating by October with a 200000 watt UHF facility on a 552 foot tower on channel 17. He says initial plans include courting all networks and selecting NBC. Iowa Broadcasters Association President Ed Breen urges WOI TV to shift from commercial to educational broadcasting to serve central Iowa as more commercial outlets enter the market.
James Freericks an ex-GI and pilot aided influenza stricken Eskimos on Little Diomede in the Arctic. He landed on the frozen beach due to no airfield and ferried medicines and supplies to a colony of about 100 people.
The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen called a 2300 member strike starting 5 a.m. CST Saturday against Nickel Plate Road and leased Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway. The two systems run in Ohio New York Pennsylvania Illinois and Indiana with 17000 employees. Other unions will honor picket lines, said international vice president W E B Chase of Detroit.
Superior and excellent ratings announced for Class B high schools at the twenty fifth annual University of Iowa play production festival. Superior awards went to Immaculate Conception Academy Davenport, University High Iowa City, Perry Sac City Sheldon Shenandoah and Grinnell. Marion and Monticello earned excellent ratings.
Osceola district judge Tedford H. Miles sentenced Harlan B. Hatfield, 38, a carpenter, to eight years in Fort Madison penitentiary after a March 20 jury conviction for manslaughter in the Feb 17 death of Harry T. Collins, 41, a Van Wert farmer. Miles overruled a motion for a new trial and gave defense lawyers one week to file an appeal, with Hatfield jailed on $5,000 bond pending appeal.
SEATTLE AP Two men from The Cedar Rapids Gazette area were aboard the navy transport James O Hara which arrived here Thursday from Korea. They are Pfc. James A Byers Belle Plaine and Cpl. Rollo J Trumbull Coggon.

Weston A. Youngman, 43, of Belle Plaine, pled guilty to a drunk driving charge. He was fined 300 dollars plus costs by Judge Floyd Philbrick, with a 50 dollar down payment and 50 dollars monthly. He was arrested last Saturday in Marion and had initially pled innocent before changing to guilty on Thursday.
County Treasurer Frank Bates warned that citizens must pay the first half real and personal property taxes by 5 p.m. to avoid a late penalty. The penalty is three quarters of one percent per month and begins Wednesday, April 1. The due amount covers half the yearly tax. second half taxes are due in October.
The will of Arthur J. Sloan who died February 28 was admitted to probate Friday. The Wilson Cedar Rapids Employees Credit Union obtained a 225.90 judgment against John Smith Jr and Edna M Smith and an execution against their personal property for the amount. Vlach Motor Company also wins 227.78 against Edmon Crockett in an account suit.

Des Moines Iowa prospects of the Iowa senate joining a proposed legislative investigation of the State Conservation appeared dim.
