Iowa Aims to Renovate State Historical Museum Despite $80 Million Price Tag
Des Moines officials warn the State Historical Museum needs extensive repairs including leaking pipes and an undersized climate system that threatens 209 million items. The plan would downsize the 234000 square foot building to 155000 and add an outdoor public space. The project costs 80 million with 65 million sought from the state over five years and 15 million from donations. Governor Branstad proposed 7.8 million. lawmakers say the total is too high. The Save Iowa History Alliance criticizes reduced staffing and hours and urges safeguarding the collection first.
