Fewer Competitive Seats Cited in Redistricting Debate
The Gazette fact check analyzes claims by U S Rep Dave Loebsack that congressional districts are increasingly safe. Using Cook PVI and Silver models the piece notes 164 competitive seats in 1998 dropping to 90 in 2012 and as of 2016 only a small number of toss ups remain, with safety margins expanding. The analysis underscores gerrymandering and political topography as factors and cites calls for polarization linked to primary threats.
