Iowa Road Fund Could Shrink 36 Percent Without Trouble
Iowa highway fund chief engineer Fred R. White warned the primary road fund would break even with an annual 13.8 million from motorists and could endure a 36.4 percent drop in receipts from April 1941 to March 1942. If receipts fall further, options include county property tax levies, transferring gasoline tax from secondary to primary roads, or refunding maturing bonds. Fixed expenses total 8.3 million in interest and principal, plus 4.5 million for maintenance and 1.0 million for engineering and overhead.
