Chase Is Given Life Term For Cowley Murder
Chicago (UP) John Paul Chase former California bootlegger who allied with George Nelson in Dillinger’s gang escaped the gallows when a federal jury convicted him of murdering Samuel P. Cowley, recommending mercy which mandated life imprisonment. Cowley and Herman E. Hollis were slain November 27 near Barrington after confronting Nelson, Chase and Helen Gillis. Nelson was killed by the “G” men before dying. Jury deliberated 3 hours 45 minutes.
