House committee defeats private liquor sales bill in Iowa
Iowa House State Government Committee voted 10 to 4 against a Senate backed plan to expand private liquor sales. The measure would have created a licensed class for private retailers where state stores are unprofitable and would have private shops buy from the state at standard prices. Officials warned the fiscal hit to the treasury would run about 1.59 million next year and 1.18 million the year after. Defeat does not end liquor system reform efforts this year.
