In El Salvador 32 soldiers were killed in an ambush east of San Salvador as rebels escalated activity on the eve of the first presidential election in seven years. In Washington the Pentagon said U S paratroopers jumped into Honduras for three days of maneuvers tied to the vote while about 480 personnel from the United States and Honduras took part in operation Kilo Punch.
