Hess Trial Brings Secret Treaty Objection
In Nuremberg a Russian prosecutor blocked Rudolf Hess’s counsel from reading in court excerpts of a purported secret treaty between Germany and Russia three days before Poland’s invasion. The defense argued the treaty fixed spheres of influence in eastern Europe and cited an affidavit by former German ambassador Dr. Friedrich Gaus. The document allegedly stated Germany would not seek control of Latvia Lithuania Estonia and Finland. Earlier Hess counsel had claimed Hess warned Britain that Nazis would starve Britons if the war continued after an invasion of the British Isles.
