Alaska Ranger Sinking Claims Four Lives Off Aleutians
Forty-two crewmen were rescued after the 184 foot Seattle based Alaska Ranger sank 120 miles west of Dutch Harbor during 8 foot seas and 25 knot winds. Four crewmembers died and one remains missing. The Coast Guard investigates the accident and environmental regulators report 145000 gallons of diesel aboard with a quarter by half mile sheen.

Researchers seek fly foe to eastern hemlock pest
Oregon State University researchers identify two Pacific Northwest fly species that prey on the woolly adelgid, the invasive pest devastating eastern hemlocks. The insects could be released in the East after tests, supplementing decades of Forest Service efforts. The adelgid has killed tens of thousands of trees, threatening Appalachian forests and wildlife.
