The Cedar Rapids region reflects a broader literacy challenge with about 10 percent of adults illiterate or near illiteracy. Kirkwood Community College runs English classes for 50 local adults, many jobless or undereducated, including Rose Ziadeh who aims to pass the citizenship test. Nationwide, 26 million adults cannot read, and 46 million struggle with reading proficiency, fueling labor market barriers.
Frank Byrn a 44 year old maintenance worker at Linn County Care Facility describes life as an illiterate as 100 times harder. He grew up in Missouri and Iowa quit school at 17 after being held back and overlooked during reading drills. He says reading and writing scarcity limits hiring and life opportunities and that marginalization feels like a disease.
