New Mellera Abbey Faces Declining Monastic Numbers
A Gazette report from the New Melleray Abbey twelve miles southwest of Dubuque notes a drop in monks and attendance. In 1984 four monks died including Brother Gerard McDonough, and today about 30 monks sing in the church of a community once home to 130. Aging brothers and few new entrants mark the abbey’s waning daily sessions.
