Former Klan Leader Stephenson Freed From Prison

D C Stephenson, 56, ex Indiana Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan, is released after 25 years of a life sentence. He left Indiana state prison at 6 p m CST with Tulsa awaiting to live with a daughter. He told reporters he will not return to politics and seeks to walk in peace with God.

City Hall Notes On Alley Vacations And Street Widening

The Sanitary Farms Dairy asked the city council to vacate most of an alley between F and E avenues NW from Second to Summer streets to build new facilities. a south end portion would stay open. Walter Barngrover reported the plan, with further study by the city engineer and attorney. William McClean pressed widening Eleventh Street north of Sixth Avenue for sidewalks, assigned to the engineering department. Council authorized a street light grant for Joseph J. Kolarik near Cold Avenue NE and the Illinois Central railroad tracks through Iowa Electric Light and Power.

City approves audit firm and traffic damages settlement

The city council authorized an audit of city finances by Mc Gladrey Hanson Dunn and Company of Cedar Rapids starting April 1. It accepted 232.50 from M. C. and Philip Sweet for damages to a traffic signal and signed a release. Engineer Young recommended Blahnik and Berger be allowed to widen Third Avenue SE by 12 feet and Eighth Street SE by eight feet near Kadlee Brothers building.

City council approves curb cut and statue plan in Greene square

The council authorized a 28 foot curb cut for a driveway on Eighth Street. The Waubeek Area Boy Scout Council informed the council it has accepted action to place a proposed 16 foot Statue of Liberty in Greene square funded by Scout contributions and may relocate if future action requires.

Cedar Rapids permit moves and gas main work approved

A class C beer permit transfer was authorized from 69 Sixteenth avenue SW to 62 Sixteenth avenue SW. The Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company received permission to install gas mains at nine Cedar Rapids locations with specified routing details. Refunds of 25 for surrendered cigaret permits were granted to Everett Nemer and Leo A. Yount, who also surrendered class C beer permits. New cigaret and class C beer permits were issued to Arthur F. Bahls, George Salome, and Mrs. Feral E. Stoddard.

An expert testifies before the Senate Finance Committee that tipping by diners to waiters and waitresses totals about 2 billion dollars yearly. She notes many workers may not report tips for Social Security and suggests a flat minimum wage with a 10 to 15 percent surcharge on checks.
