Robbie Waller of Oklahoma beat Carl Fronhofer of Pittsburgh 7-2 at 174. Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State defeated Scott Barker of Missouri 13-5 at 184. Damion Hahn of Minnesota edged Jon Trenge of Lehigh 5-4 at 197. Steve Mocco of Iowa defeated Kevin Hoy of Air Force 8-3 in heavyweight.
Cael Sanderson, after finishing with a 159-0 career record and four NCAA titles, watched his first NCAA Championships as a spectator at Kemper Arena. He says the experience is weird and different, enjoying the moment while Iowa State scored 30 points for 19th place. He transitions to freestyle with aims at World and Olympic gold, noting the challenge of adapting to top competition.
