Six members of two families living at 1800 Ellis Boulevard NW escaped unharmed after a Sunday explosion badly damaged their Cedar Rapids house. Adults and three children, including a two month old infant, sheltered on the lower and upper floors as windows and plaster flew. Pierson was away. Mrs. Pierson and children plus neighbor boy James Usher were inside with the Simons and their infant son Robert upstairs. The home, heated by a low pressure steam system with a basement gas water heater, was normally steam heated from the greenhouse system.
