Rollie Struss, 80, former associate director at Ames Laboratory, holds a carbon brick from the 1942 Chicago first nuclear reactor at his workshop north of Ames. He becomes the first former lab worker to receive compensation for illnesses linked to toxic exposure at the lab.
An Iowa man, Rollie Struss of Ames, age 80, becomes the first from Ames Laboratory to qualify for compensation after a seven year fight over toxic exposures. He helped develop nuclear weapons from the 1950s to the 1980s, later facing colon and esophageal cancers and arguing that latent radiation effects were not understood.
A wild turkey flew through a northbound semi windshield on Interstate 380 near Urbana and was later euthanized. The Cedar Rapids area reports ongoing turkey-people encounters with residents describing aggressive behavior and wildlife officials receiving numerous calls.
