A Gazette analysis shows Linn and Johnson counties send far fewer inmates to prison than many counties. In Cedar Rapids, Daniel Bryant 30 shares a room at a halfway house after a felony theft conviction and serves one year at the Gerald Hinzman Center with outside work, a windowed room, furloughs, and drug treatment classes.
Iowa Department of Corrections figures show inmate counts by county as of March 6. The Gazette graphics present county totals and highlight regional corrections data for reporting.
President Bush said U.S. forces will remain in Iraq for years and future leaders must decide when to withdraw. He defended the mission as essential for stability and to curb al Qaeda, while noting force levels will be adjusted based on battlefield conditions.
President Bush rejects pressure for the defense secretary to quit and refuses to set a troop withdrawal deadline. He accuses Sen. Feingold of needless partisanship over censure of the domestic surveillance program as a deadly prison uprising unfolds in Iraq with 100 gunmen storming facilities.
The Gazette reports a mixed picture for bariatric care at University Hospitals and nearby centers. Gastric bypass is the common bariatric procedure creating a small pouch and rerouting the small intestine to limit calories absorbed. St Luke’s surgeries fell from 58 in 2002 and 2008 to 20 in 2004 and nine last year while insurers use centers of excellence as guides rather than mandates.
