DES MOINES Iowa lawmakers unveil a plan to tighten regulation and enforcement for confined livestock operations to protect water and air quality. The bipartisan panel says the measure preserves the industry while addressing concerns from interest groups and some lawmakers.
A proposal to protect air and water around large livestock operations calls for DNR air quality monitoring near confinement facilities, reduced confinement unit density, soil phosphorus tracking from manure, bans in 100 year floodplains, monitoring wells near lagoons, longer setbacks from sensitive waterways, permit requirements for 250 hog units, and greater local input via county board recommendations.
