Partisan battle shapes Iowa credit bill debate

In the Iowa House a partisan clash grows as Democrats push a credit bill to cut bank and retailer interest on open end credit. Floor manager Rep. Ned Chiodo says the 3 percent reduction could save consumers up to 25 million dollars annually while Republicans warn lower rates may limit credit access. Debate proceeds slowly.

Ray backs link between heavier trucks and fuel tax hike

Gov Robert Ray said he would favor legislation allowing heavier trucks on Iowa highways if tied to a fuel tax increase to offset road damage. He noted the 80,000 pound limit proposal by the Iowa DOT, with fees rising to about seven million dollars annually and a changed road use tax fund distribution. The fuel tax measure, already moving through the Senate, would raise gasoline and diesel taxes.

Gas rate refunds reflect inflation and pass through hikes

The utility cites continued inflation since the November 1974 rate rise as the main reason for higher charges. Since 1974, several pass through increases approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission have raised bills. The latest March 1 increase adds about 6.45 dollars a month for the average user of 300 CCFs, lifting the 300 CCF bill to 65.84 dollars compared with 31.35 dollars on March 1, 1973. Iowa-Illinois also plans electric rate changes including lower charges for users under 15 kWh daily and a summer winter differential raising summer rates.

Wedelstedt Convicted in Davenport Film Theft Case

Iowa Supreme Court upholds five year maximum on receiving stolen property and three year limit on conspiracy. A Black Hawk County jury found Wedelstedt guilty in February 1976 for stealing a Davenport film collection worth over 100000 dollars from the 1920s. The haul included Gone with the Wind The Iron Horse titles from stars Mary Pickford Buster Keaton and Douglas Fairbanks. The films were found in a rental truck at the Cedar Falls Holiday Inn in December 1974 after two Missouri men were arrested. The case involved an undercover BCI agent and entrapment questions, with the court allowing the conspiracy charge to go to the jury. Wedelstedt faces federal prison terms tied to a separate Chicago Cedar Rapids scheme and may total 20 years if consecutive. He remains free on bond while appealing.

Earth’s tilt drives seasons not proximity to sun

The Earth is closer to the sun in winter than in summer, but seasonal temperatures arise from the tilt and angle of sunlight. Winter remains cold and summer warm due to solar incidence rather than distance alone.
