Buyers flock to Chicago livestock markets as snow and cold boost demand. Butcher hogs and sows gained 50 cents, marking their best prices since February 17. Cattle receipts around 13,000 head amid brisk buying and optimistic salablility estimates for sale day.
CHICAGO INL hog receipts 9,000 with higher bids. Bulk choice 190-240 lb butchers 17.00 to 17.50, 250-290 lb mostly 16.50 to 17.00, 300-380 lb 15.85 to 16.50, sows 14.00 to 15.75. Cattle receipts 6,500 with varied changes. high choice fed steers 29.25 to 32.00, good to choice vealers 21.00 to 27.00, cows 12.50 to 15.00. Sheep receipts 2,500 lambs 25 to 50 cents higher. 110 lb lambs 22.50 to 24.00, 105 lb lambs 24.25 to 24.50, shorn lambs 21.25 to 23.00.
Receipts Tuesday about 60 000 vs 63 500 week ago and 44 000 year ago. Active demand for butchers with 60 to 220 lb at 15 to 25 cents higher. heavier weights and sows up 15 to 50 cents or more. Top price 16.65. Barrows and gilts by weight ranges finish at 13.90 to 16.65 depending on size. sows also show gains across weight classes with prices from 11.85 to 14.75 for 450 to 550 lb).
Cattle receipts reach 9 500 with a mostly fed steer and heifer run. Cows light in supply, demand moderately active and steady to strong. instances up 25 cents. Bulls firm to 25 cents higher. Vealers strong and stockers subdued by light supply. Several loads of choice fed steers range 27.00 to 28.00, bulk 24.00 to 26.75. good to low choice 21.50 to 23.75. utility and commercial cows 12.25 to 15.00. canners and cutters 10.50 to 12.00.
Cattle receipts 5,500 no calves. Slaughter steers and heifers largely 25 cents higher than best Monday. Heifers 25 to 50 cents higher. Choice steers 23.50 to 26.00 with prime weights around 1,350 lbs at 30.25 and 19.50 to 22.50. Choice heifers 21.50 to 24.00, good grades 17.50 to 21.00.
Prices at the Cedar Rapids plant show hogs up a quarter with ranges for choice and prime meat hogs, lambs, yearlings, and ewes. Poultry and egg figures follow, with grain and straw prices listed and native wool quoted.

NEW YORK AP reports the stock market rose Tuesday, regaining a major portion of Monday's loss. Prices gained around two points with some stocks higher, while a few posted fractional losses. Estimated trading was about 1,900,000 shares.

London report states Communist Poland jailed five members of Jehovahs Witnesses for espionage and subversion directed by a Brooklyn headquarters. Sentences ranged from six to twelve years.
Atlanta police solved a drug store burglary when false teeth found under a window fit suspect Walter F. Cooper 44. Officers matched the teeth to Cooper and charged him with the narcotics burglary.
Cedar Rapids- Marion Cornell alumni group met Monday at the Montrose hotel for a dinner and social hour attended by 43 members. Paul Scott, Cornell alumni relations director, showed slides from other groups before a new slate elected Tom DeWees president Donald Mathern vice president and Mrs James King secretary all Cedar Rapids residents. Donald Buss served as outgoing president and chaired the meeting.
In Chicago, soybeans showed some strength as March contracts neared expiration, aided by short covering, while grains faded after an initial rally. Feed grains led gains on wintry Midwest weather, with wheat drifting and corn slipping mildly as prices moved across March futures.

Chicago prices show live poultry steady to firm with 5 trucks noted, butter receipts at 1,162,577 pounds and scores around 89 to 93 cents per pound, eggs fully steady with white large extras at over 41 per dozen, potatoes and old stock supplies aiding a dull market. Blizzard conditions constrain trading, with Idaho Russets at 4.55 per 50 pounds and Minnesota North Dakota pontiacs washed and waxed at 2.40.
Wholesale egg prices barely move with extras, large and medium ranges cited. Butter remains about steady as receipts reach 1,404,759. Prices unchanged across the board and noted by USDA.

Marion auxiliary members chose delegates and alternates to the American Legion Linn County spring conference set for April 14 in Cedar Rapids. The roster includes Mines Jack Shinault Roscoe Markert Earl Helbig Howard Danford John Howe Jr William Walker Robert Mann Elizabeth Hart Bernard Struck Gerald Shirk Wilbur Young Raymond Lake and alternates. A May 13 party at the Veterans Hospital Iowa City will host the Marion unit with Mrs Hill in charge of entertainment and Mrs Lake chairing the refreshment committee assisted by several members. New members will be initiated at the April meeting and a picnic supper was served to 80 members and families.
Gilbert E. Rathman was elected president of the Marion board of education at a Monday reorganization in the high school. Merrill S. Smith became vice-president. Mrs. W. E. Reinsch was hired to teach English in the high school for April and May, succeeding Kathryn Beckman who leaves April 9 to marry Lt. Charles Dale Haworth. A March 14 vote canvass showed no discrepancies. Dr. Norman W. Stookey was installed as a board member.
William E. Kerns 76 of 1047 Fourth avenue died Tuesday at 2:30 am in a Cedar Rapids hospital after a brief illness. Born November 4 1878 in Van Horne he lived in Rock Rapids and came to Marion 56 years ago. He served 18 years as a marshal and policeman and was a member of St. Josephs Church survived by his wife Nelle Sawyer two sons George P. Kerns and Robert L. Kerns a daughter Katharine Wallace three grandchildren and two brothers Charles and Patrick. Requiem high mass at St Josephs Friday 9:30 am Burial Cedar Memorial. Rosary at Murdoch Marion Thursday 7:15 pm.
The Linn County Farm Bureau women's chorus held a farewell tea at the Presbyterian church parlors for Mrs. C. V. R. De Jong who is moving with her family to Aurora Colorado. Chairmen included Mrs Elmer Stamy Mrs Miles Sutera and Mrs Clyde Kearns. The tea table featured crystal and silver and was presided by Mrs Milford Hartung the chorus president.
Leland Auld of Waubeek as chorus director spoke while Mrs. De Jong received a gift. Twenty four members shared the courtesy. Brother Dies Clyde William and Mabel Kearns of Marion were advised of Joseph M. Kearns death March 17 at Rainier Washington. Surviving are his wife four children eight grandchildren a great grandchild and a brother Ralph Kearns of Woodburn Oregon. Mr. Kearns visited Marion five years ago.
J A Marshek was elected president of post C of the Travelers Protective Association. Other officers include Dr J J Impehl as vice president Fred Stanford as secretary treasurer Robert J Connolly Sheldon A DeWees and Russell Carne as directors.
Visit by Dykes family from Overland Park Kansas to see grandparents Mr and Mrs C A Dykes. Mother Everett Dykes and brother Kelly Dykes arrive Thursday to visit in the Dykes home and with relatives in Cedar Rapids.
Lions club members will attend Marion high school athletic banquet this evening in the high school gym. There will be no dinner meeting for the Lions club tonight.
Mrs. J B Howell is reported improving after illness on Sunday and remains a patient at St Luke's hospital.

Mr and Mrs E D Scandrett of Kewanee Illinois and their children Jimmie and Elaine spent the weekend with Mrs Cippera and Mr Cippera.

Four young people died early Tuesday when their car tried to outrun a pursuing police car and was struck by a Pennsylvania passenger train in Columbus Ohio. The victims were Arnold Castle 18 Victor Sykes 17 Susan Carroll 21 and Roberta Pugh 19.
The Iowa City public schools board approved a $200 annual raise for teachers starting in the 1955-56 school year. The board said higher salaries were needed to prevent hiring teachers without bachelor of arts degrees.
A 27-year-old Mason City man died Tuesday when his truck collided with a semi-trailer near Britt. Two others were injured in the wreck, authorities said.
At a county road intersection nine miles southwest of Britt, Lloyd Christensen died about ten minutes after a collision from a neck injury. The semi trailer driver Vernyn Keiser of Fort Dodge was in serious condition at a Britt hospital. George Hisgen of Lynn, Mass. sustained minor injuries.

Dr. Ben T. Galbraith of McAlester Oklahoma admitted to killing his wife with a wine bottle and poisoning his three children. He said he woke at 1 30 am and decided to murder his family then set their home on fire to cover it up. The physician claimed no motive and later tried to take his own life. He described using morphine for the children and arsenic poisoning after shots failed. He was arrested in Henderson Tennessee after the family funeral in Bells Tennessee.
Des Moines report says Ira Buckels resigns as administrative assistant to the last three attorneys general Robert Larson Leo Hoegh and Dayton Countryman. George West Des Moines lawyer appointed assistant attorney general on Countryman’s staff to fill Buckels role.
