Bruce Fishwild reports assignments for servicemen in Europe and updates on reenlistment policies. Walker Smith serves aboard the cruiser Newport News in the Mediterranean as part of the Sixth Fleet. Air force and Marine relations discuss reserve commissions extensions until 1955 and re enlistment windows for Marines, with draftees serving full 24 months and early releases for Korea veterans.
Air Force Second Lt. Wendell J. Pribyl, son of Mrs. Caroline Pribyl, began a six week information and education course at Fort Slocum New York. Edward L. Melsha, son of Mr. and Mrs. L J Melsha Ingleside SW, graduated with honors from the Fort Lee Virginia food service school and was promoted to private first class. Pfc Raymond L Bright 21 survived an enemy mine in Korea with minor injuries after a blast punctured gear and shredded his trousers but he continued on patrol.
Several Cedar Rapids servicemen are listed aboard Far East fleet ships. Fred C. Freese serves on Ajax as storekeeper second class, son of Emil and Mrs. Freese of 361 Nineteenth St SE. Fred J. Palumbo, airman, serves on Philippine Sea on its third Korean tour, a Loras College graduate and son of Florence Palumbo of 219 Eighth Ave SW. Jack C. Watson, radarman, serves on Wedderburn on its second Far East tour, Franklin high school graduate, son of Louise Ritchie of 1608 I Ave NE. Army Pvt. John J. Hlavacek, son of John and Mrs. Hlavacek of 501 Sixteenth Ave SW, left for Camp Stoneman after furlough. former Coe College athlete scheduled to depart for Japan. Two Cedar Rapids sailors aboard Kidd on its return from a second Korean tour are Alvin D. Smith and Clarence L. Wahl, both with ties to local addresses.
Local notices list promotions and assignments including Charles R. Buls, son of Carl W. Buls, to seaman aboard the Philippine Sea in Korean waters. Don Lundquist, son of Edwin Lundquist, promoted to captain in the Army in Korea. Army Pvt. Donald M. Long and Leo M. Turner Jr. assigned to Camp Roberts for basic training with a medium tank battalion in the Seventh Armored Division.
Lt. James H. Barry son of Mrs H T Barry 2323 Fourth Avenue SE serves aboard the submarine Irex one of 13 subs taking part in a naval exercise in the Caribbean.
Richard J. Spinka has been promoted to sergeant and returned to Fort Jackson South Carolina after a 15 day furlough spent with his mother Mrs Yana Spinka at 1019 Thirty fourth street NE.
