Joe Baretich and his wife Margery found their snowman in Cedar Rapids damaged during the night. To deter further acts they drilled holes in the figure on Second Avenue SE and filled them with water so the melt would form ice and reinforce the snowman against vandals.
A major winter storm swept East Iowa bringing up to 11 inches of snow and strong winds. Dozens of crashes occurred with two deaths in north and north central Iowa and multiple injuries, including Carolyn Westerbeck in Elkader with head injuries.
Walter Mondale defeated Gary Hart in Illinois with 42 percent to 35 percent while Jesse Jackson trailed in third. Mondale led 115 to 44 delegates and called the win a significant boost as campaigns head toward big industrial states. Hart blamed limited campaigning time and pledged to press on.
The Senate failed to reach the two thirds threshold for a constitutional change allowing school prayer, with 56 voting for and 44 against. Iowa lawmakers approve a measure to curb damages based on fault. The plan preserves pure comparative negligence but bars collecting from insolvent or uninsured defendants, shielding state and local governments and some nominal defendants from full settlements.
