Gold leads broad market rally as stocks rise Friday
The stock market advanced broadly with the Dow up 6.22 to 992.80 and the NYSE index up 45. Gold priced near 540 an ounce spiked on tensions in Poland. Homestake Mining and USA Ltd. led gains among mining stocks as savings and loan issues benefited from lower rates. Volume totaled 61.98 million on the NYSE.

Prices for various weight ranges are listed, with No 1-2 butchers 200-230 lb at 37.00 to 38.50, and sow prices from 33.00 to 35.50 for 300-600 lb. Receipts estimated at 80,000 with 10,000 Saturday, 100,000 Thursday, 79,000 week ago, and 114,000 year ago.
