Iowa State College extension service releases a 1951 1952 crop and soil bulletin urging production gains via soil management rather than acre expansion. It cites erosion, soil nitrogen limits, and rising fertilizer use, urging rotation with legumes, contouring, manure use, lime, drainage, proper tillage, improved seed and weed control to lift yields.
More than 20 Winneshiek county dairy herd owners show interest in an owner-sampler testing service approved by the Winneshiek Dairy Herd Improvement Association. The program, under DHIA supervision, may start around April 1 at the Decorah Ice Cave Creamery with a goal of 100 members. Monthly samples are collected by herd owners and tested centrally. costs range from 30 cents per cow for small herds to 18 cents for larger herds.
Additional heat from easy to install heat lamps can help reduce losses in baby pigs during the first week or two of their lives.
Farmers heard that price ceilings on some foods may be set above parity to stimulate output. OPS official Hutson said linked ceilings must keep production, noting beef prices currently frozen at retail but not farm level. Forum speakers warned against livestock controls, while parity advocates urged a broader plan.
France announced a conference to study an agricultural pool for Western Europe. Invitations will go to the Council of Europe members plus Austria Portugal and Switzerland. The plan aims to create a West Europe farm agency similar to the Schuman plan for merging coal and steel.
The Production and Marketing Administration reports meat production under federal inspection for the week ended March 17 totaled 298 million pounds, similar to the prior week and about one percent higher than 294 million pounds for the same week last year.
March 22 sale features 28 bulls and 28 females under Hawk eye Downs with Earl S. Girton as sale manager. A series of closing out sales follow including blacksmith tools by M. E. Holland in West Branch, 90 acre land sale of Mary Jiroutek estate near Ely, and estate closings for Bert Edaburne near Cedar Rapids with a postponed Zack McArthur sale near Fairfax.
The agriculture department plans to issue a wartime set aside order for products from farm commodities within weeks. A meeting with fruit and vegetable canners is scheduled to discuss required set asides to ensure army supplies. The move would compel canners to reserve a percentage of production for military buyers before market sale.
C. R. Schoby of Algona Iowa was re elected to a year term as president of the American Dairy Association. Merrill N. Warnick of Pleasant Grove Utah was elected vice president. Delegates approved a stronger advertising program to boost dairy sales and goodwill.
Iowa State College hosts the fifty sixth Dairy Industry Day to update dairy workers on late research and manufacturing methods. Isi Iverson notes rising attendance past 800 and the evolution from bulk milk to processed products with cream quality experts, sanitarians, and growing creamery directors shaping a $1 million plus coop sector.
4-H girls organization training on home furnishings scheduled for Allamakee county March 28. Meeting at 10 a.m. in the Waukon extension office with Emelda Kunau in charge. Leaders county committee officers and an older girl from each club invited.
The Farm Journal notes Sani tary Farm Dairies and Gould Milk and Cream Company work on a frozen milk concentrate for U S markets. Technical and space constraints block Cedar Rapids production though Gould’s Minnesota plants already ship to armed forces and Alaska civilians. The two firms, plus Chestnut Farms Dairy, push market expansion while noting evaporation and freezing methods. A separate item recalls the misdelivery of a prized Holstein bull Creston Pride to market, fatally altered by an erroneous trucker haul.
A complete closing out sale is announced at Bert Edaburne Place located ten miles north of Cedar Rapids on Highway 150 or eight miles south of Center Point on Highway 150. The notice lists sale timing and property details.
The Wolrab sale at Hawkeye Downs drew buyers from Wisconsin Illinois Iowa and Oklahoma aided by fieldmen from the Berkshire association. Seventeen gilts for late March and April farrow averaged 197 dollars, six fall boars 113 and seven fall gilts 83 with top gilt at 350 dollars. Luke Gaule of Springfield Illinois served as auctioneer and Jay Forig of Mt. Vernon clerked the sale.
PMA chief in Ottumwa says reorganizing the federal Production and Marketing Administration and the Soil Conservation Service will not alter state conservation districts or commissioners. Hazen states no agency loses identity and farmers gain better service and value for taxes. Local officials Mendell McDonald Lodwick support the plan.
