Schwartz surrendered to authorities and is jailed in Linn County on first degree robbery charges.
Gazette staff report two drivers died in separate Friday crashes in Eastern Iowa. Brad Alan First 29 of Lowden perished when his C J Service Co truck hit a Chicago and North Western train near a crossing north of Highway 30. Crystal L Schumer 32 of North Milan Illinois died when her van collided head on with a Cedar Johnston Farm Service tanker truck on Johnson County Road X 14 north of Lone Tree. Freundt 50 of Iowa City, wearing a seat belt, was not injured. The State Patrol noted wet road conditions but did not claim fault. The train engineer Tom Gerald Kershner 50 of Clinton was uninjured.
Justice Byron White announces June retirement at 75 ending 31 years on the Supreme Court. The move opens the door for a Democratic president to name a new associate justice and could tilt the court left after White’s recent centrist stances on abortion affirmative action religion and the death penalty. President Clinton praised the timing as favorable for vetting candidates.
Abortion restriction and reinstating the death penalty failed to clear House committees before Friday’s adjournment. A central Iowa east west Amtrak route gained momentum as the Transportation Committee approved a funding plan, though Senate support and gubernatorial backing remained uncertain.
