Coal boom drew forebears of today's citizens to mines

Earl Nelson recalls digging coal in the 1950s to get mud while Alton Grudgings ran one of the last What Cheer coal operations until 1942. The brothers dug tunnels tall enough for Grudgings’s 6 foot 4 inch frame but shale ceilings pressed low. Earlier settlers and the railroad spurred mining along Coal Creek.
