Senator Gillette told the senate that by March 17 a large food company raised coffee to 89 1/2 cents a pound after controls ended, predicting further retail increases. He traced past spikes to speculative raids and urged Congress to reintroduce commodity exchange act coverage, while noting the policy shift under the Eisenhower administration.
The Iowa House approved a Senate bill to open deer season with revisions. Amendments expanded license price to 25 dollars and added a raccoon season, while limits on hunting gear were defeated. The season runs Sept 1 to March 1 with bag and possession limits of one. Out of state hunters are barred.
Four armed bandits killed a guard and wounded four others at the Libby McNeill Libby offices in the stockyards. Officials say the cash box netted between 15 000 and 20 000 dollars. The robbers fled in a green panel truck after a gunfight on a fourth floor landing. Marie Zutke 26 and three men were among the injured. The victims were in serious condition as crowds fled the scene during lunchtime.
Senate debate over Charles E. Bohlen as ambassador to Russia intensified as Sen McCarran disclosed that State Department security chief Scott McLeod could not clear Bohlen. McLeod reportedly informed Dulles, who backed the nomination. Taft urged floor action pending FBI findings.
Residents in Palo and east of Cedar Rapids reported a bright light with a silvery sheen at about 6 30 PM and a smoke trail. The object was seen by Allis Chalmers workers and observers in Dubuque Monticello and was described as a fast moving jet plane by some through a high power glass. Cedar Rapids airport offered no explanation.
A Wal lace's Farmer and Iowa Homestead poll finds 52 percent of Iowa farm people favor an educational TV network, with 34 percent against and 14 percent undecided. The survey shows TV owners more supportive, and households with school children more likely to back the project.
Larry Brown 15 of 1541 Fiftieth Street NE was hit by a southbound semi on Center Point Road NE at 8:55 p.m. He suffered a fractured leg and internal injuries and was listed in very serious condition at St. Luke's Hospital. The bicycle was dragged 89 feet under the truck. the rider was hurled about half that distance. Driver Robert Elkin of Iowa Falls said he horned twice and tried to pass, then the youth turned left into Fiftieth Street. Police noted no light or reflector on the bicycle.
Charles G. Kotek 43 was sentenced by Judge K E Heiserman to life in prison for second degree murder in the Dec 9 1952 shotgun killing of Pauline Kassel 32. The court followed the recommendation of County Attorney Willis A Glassgow and assistant Nazette noting Kotek’s lengthy criminal record. Kotek’s attorneys sought 10 years and Kotek accepted the verdict calmly.
Gazette Correspondent says Iowa Democrat Sen. Guy M. Gillette warned on the senate floor that a rise in retail coffee prices of five to 10 cents a pound may occur, as coffee speculators stay alert in Washington.
Cedar Rapids wholesalers report coffee prices up three to six cents per pound depending on brand Retailers are starting to reflect the higher costs as they buy new supplies joining the overall price hike.
President Eisenhower will travel to Williamsburg Virginia on May 15 to accept an honorary doctor of laws degree from William and Mary College according to a White House announcement.
Senator Flanders charges the Air Force with releasing a false account of Saturday's Soviet attack on a U.S. plane near Kamchatka. He says the report was designed to sway public opinion and injure national confidence, criticizing the weather reconnaissance explanation as inaccurate and inconceivable.
Dewey Swicegood a Civil Air Patrol observer from Danville Virginia stood seven miles from Nevada test blast saw the sun like flash and heard the roar. His left shoe was blown off his foot by the shock though he retrieved the shoe and sought an explanation for the distant effect.
Fire swept a four story Chestnut Hotel on Chicago's near Northside injuring nine and killing five, including a baby. Fire officials say arson is suspected as flames trapped victims on the fourth floor after racing up an airshaft from the basement.
