Lawmakers debate a safe haven proposal allowing parents to surrender a newborn to a health facility with no penalties, and a 911 for kids hotline to report abuse. A separate measure would place wheel locks on vehicles of delinquent child support payers as budget talks loom over a projected 2002 shortfall.

Briefs: Mall Evacuation Smoke Incident and Teen Rollver
Coralville reports a pyrotechnic device triggered a mall heat sensor near Scheels causing light smoke and a tile spot. Fire crews contained the scene in about 20 minutes with one engine dispatched. In Spillville a 16 year old Ossian teen injured in a single car rollover was released from Gundersen Lutheran after overnight hold. The car driven by Nathan Bohr rolled into a ditch on Swan Road near 310th Ave. near Spillville with Heying ejected from the rear window. Authorities estimate the time of the crash as uncertain. Cedar Rapids hosts the Cedar River Dragon Boat Festival 2001 on June 30 at Robbins Lake Ellis Park from 8 am to 4 pm. Information line 366-5755.

Marion pool tax appeal heads to Iowa Supreme Court
