Two probate actions heard Monday and Tuesday admitted Julia Benesh and Isa K. Kepler wills. Benesh left to son Leonard Dvorak of Chicago. Eva Caldwell named executrix without bond. Kepler estate splits half to daughter-in-law Mabel Kepler and half to grandsons Paul and Merle Kepler and Dr Gordon E Rahn for three great grandchildren Victor Vance Rex Rahn. Rahn named executor without bond.
John G. Cartano, 26, pled guilty to embezzlement by agent and was sentenced to six months in county jail with the sentence suspended on condition he restitution of $992. Police say he converted tavern funds while employed at the Mirror Lounge last year. he had initially pled not guilty but changed to guilty.
Two men pled innocent in district court Tuesday. Joe Aldrich 20 of near Ely faces lewd practices charges involving a 15 year old on February 27 with bond set at 500 dollars. Robert J. Fry 31 of Waterloo is charged with cashing a false ninety two dollar check in Cedar Rapids last August after arrest in Waterloo last Thursday.
Two divorce actions were dismissed by plaintiffs on Monday and Tuesday. Wayne L. Munson versus Nadia J. Munson and Martha A. Mitchell versus Leo H. Mitchell were dropped. A contract suit between H. E. Montgomery and Fay and Mabel French was also dismissed due to a settlement.
Bruce Smith Monday won a judgment of 200.78 against William Dickerson in an auto damage case. A new suit filed Tuesday by Robert Eaton seeks 135.68 against Clarence Kuhn over a February 12 accident at Eighth Avenue and Third Street SE.
London police failed to recapture Bertie the six foot boa constrictor using dogs and searchers until owner Regionald Fairburn employed a ruse. He used a female boy named Marilyn as a decoy, who proved to be a real snake-charmer, drawing the reptile back to the shop.
The school board approved the 1957-58 calendar outlining vacation periods and the start of the second semester. They also moved to staff the district, reappointed 545 teachers on contract, and announced resignations from 21 teachers.

Assessor Kulish receives $6,000 annual pay after confirmation by the State Tax Commission. He succeeds Newcomb who appointed no first deputy, with Lutes and Logan as other deputies. The assessor's office will close 9 to noon Wednesday for John J. Newcomb's funeral. city employees may attend with department-head permission. Kulish is a Cedar Rapids resident, WWII veteran, and member of several local groups. He has two daughters.
A committee of the American Council on Education on Monday said there is no immediate need for a seven and a half million dollar education planning program proposed by President Eisenhower. The ACE panel endorsed state planning efforts but rejected federal funding for this purpose, citing insufficient evidence from the U.S. Office of Education report.
Concrete Materials and Construction Company protests a limestone contract award saying its bid of 2.87 per ton plus rail delivery costs is legally the low bid. The council initially awarded to Gendler Stone Products and Campbell, then rescinded after a union challenge.
