Expedition Virus described by Layton to Kelvin Society
Dr J M Layton of Iowa University medical dept spoke at Coe College Kelvin Society meeting on an Alaska expedition to recover the 1918 19 influenza virus from Eskimo burials. Although some tissues were removed no live virus was found yet researchers believe they are on track to isolate the virus with autopsies confirming preserved tissues.

Coe College biology program highlights disease tissue study
Dr. Karl Goellner led a biology program at Coe College focusing on disease tissue samples. Diseased tissues were sealed in thermos containers with dry ice for transport, and researchers adapted by freezing carbon dioxide from fire extinguishers as Eskimo ice was scarce. Dr Layton was announced during the event.

Des Moines insiders report Secretary of State Mel Synhorst discarded some signatures on nominating petitions for agriculture secretary candidates but denied disqualifying any candidate. One petition sheet with 28 names matched another for Thompson and Johnson, circulated by the same person, who also circulated a petition for Clyde Spry. Spry’s petition appears valid, and others may also be valid after checks.

Patrolman Cana to Return to Duty in April
State Highway Patrolman Robert Canaday returns to duty April 1 after 16 months in the armed forces. He joined the patrol in 1948 and served at De Witt before military service and will be stationed in Muscatine upon his return.

Iowa Linn County Board Proceeds March 4 1982
The Linn County Board of Supervisors met March 4 1982 with Supervisors Sutera Wiley and Hood present. They approved minutes and personnel actions including Jeanette Zapf as secretary at 175.00 monthly. A care and maintenance resolution for a patient at State hospital was discussed and an offer of 20.00 was considered proper. Several road and land actions were authorized including removal of a section of road and property acquisitions or settlements. The board adjourned until March 11 1952.
