Army Will Leave 900 On Campus At Iowa University
University officials say 294 basic Army trainees at Iowa will depart for active service, leaving more than 900 students in training. Credit for weeks of drill will apply toward degrees, with most colleges’ losses offset by faculty freed for research and long range planning. President Virgil Hancher asserts no major problems will arise and professors can focus on postwar programs.

Grahl Seeks 18-Year-Old Vote in Iowa Constitution
Brig Gen Charles H. Grahl, Iowa selective service director, urges amending the state constitution to lower the voting age from 21 to 18. He cites World War II service by youths and education as reasons why 18-year-olds should have a voice, arguing maturity will grow with better civics education. Two paths to amendment exist, with a convention unlikely before 1950.

Becker accuses REA investigation of whitewash
John A Becker, Wisconsin rural electrification coordinator, charged before a senate committee that an agriculture department inquiry into alleged pressure by REA officials to favor copper over aluminum in REA projects was a whitewash. He named Guy W. Thaxton as pushing to steer engineering directors toward copper and said directors implied Thaxton could profit from the copper deal. Becker reported no proof to support that claim. He also defended a memorandum linking REA officials to a plan for a nationwide farm cooperative political business network, sticking to a report from Robert Craig who denied the discussion.

Iowa Schools Seek 100 New Buses Amid War Material Shortage
Paul B. Norris of the Iowa Department of Public Instruction says state districts need about 100 replacements, with priority to the worst cases. New Edict Cuts Empty Truck Returns in Des Moines District
DES MOINES AP Approximately 5,000,000 truck miles a year will be saved in 33 central Iowa counties after a rule bans deadhead trips by commercial and private carriers effective March 27. District ODT manager Gillespie said trucks will not return home empty if freight is available to haul back. Carriers must register with the DDT office if they have no return loads or only partial loads. Private carriers must register an empty truck unless they have a partial return load. If no return load, carriers must contact shippers or other carriers. No trip will exceed 25 percent of the mileage otherwise traveled home. Registration may be centralized later, with possible directions to accept full loads or lease empty vehicles to others to maximize capacity.
